Urban bach

This house transcends the barriers between urban architecture and the traditional bach. The house is located on Wellington’s eastern bays, linked to the rocky shore line by a narrow and twisting coast road.

The owner’s brief called for the creation of a multi functional space in which they could eat, sleep, entertain and enjoy an active family lifestyle. Quality of space together with good use of light and view were paramount. The architecture had to be honest and not dictate the way spaces could be used.

The architecture is intentionally eclectic, mixing form and material in a controlled but slightly ad hoc way, retaining original materials such as the sloped tongue and groove ceilings and solid timber doors.

The strategy has been of treating the existing house as a shell, then layering a series of new interlinking spaces within, to create a home that not only reflects its owners but also responds to its environment and is enjoyable to live in.
