Wilson House

Located on a knoll overlooking Pauatahanui and the hills beyond, this house turns its back on the neighbouring suburban sprawl. Distant views to the surrounding hills together with light, space and privacy were strong factors in the client’s brief.

Treatment of the exterior façade is in two forms. The outer wall is intentionally solid acting as a barrier to its surroundings while the north and west façades are almost totally transparent. Floor to ceiling glazing heightens the feeling of space and light, maximising sun and views. While connected to the land at the rear, changes in floor level together with cantilevered decks create the illusion the house is hovering above its landscape.

An open plan approach to the living spaces continues the feeling of space and light through the interior with individual areas defined by changes in form rather than walls. Simplicity and consistency in use of materials add to the minimalist and contemporary approach without compromising the requirements of a family home.
